Survive The Swarm Best Build: Upgrade Picks and What Unlocks Them

How in-run upgrade picks (attack speed, crit, weapon pairings) combine into a loadout in Survive The Swarm, plus the Coin and Essence unlocks that gate your classes and pets.

Survive The Swarm doesn't have a universally confirmed "best build" — and it's worth being clear about that up front. What's observable so far is how in-run upgrade choices stack into an effective loadout, and which Coins-and-Essence unlocks determine what you can bring into a run in the first place. Here's both, so you can assemble a build that matches your unlocks instead of chasing a single guaranteed setup.

In-run upgrade picks that shape a build

Survive The Swarm is a roguelite bullet-heaven inspired by Megabonk and Vampire Survivors: pick a class, survive waves, beat the final boss, and escape through the portal. During a run, you choose upgrades level by level, and those picks are what combine into your loadout.

In observed multiplayer play, picks that visibly helped included:

  • Attack speed — one player picked it repeatedly and used it to support teammates ("I'll help you with my insane attack speed"), so attack-speed stacking appears to benefit the group as well as the picker.
  • Crit chance and crit damage — taken together, these scale the same weapons harder than either alone.
  • Plus-one attack count for the Boomerang, adding another projectile per throw.
  • Stacking additional weapons alongside the core one, such as Linked Sword and Thunderbolt, so each level-up adds a second or third damage source.

Each player picks their own upgrades in multiplayer. The players in that session were unsure whether everyone saw identical upgrade options ("I think we all have the same upgrades though"), so don't assume your co-op partner can pick the same things you can — check the offer list in your own run. Also note that XP was shared in that multiplayer session, with both players leveling at the same pace, which may not match how quickly you unlock upgrade slots in solo runs.

These are observed casual picks, not a benchmarked meta build. They show which upgrade types combine well (attack speed + crit + extra attack count + multiple weapons), but treat the exact combination as a starting pattern, not a proven best answer.

Unlock economy: Coins and Essence gate what you can build

Before a run even starts, your build is limited by two meta-progression currencies:

  • Essence buys eggs, which hatch into pets carrying permanent buffs such as damage, attack speed, or knockback. Essence also buys new classes, each with a unique set of weapons and a special ability — so your class choice effectively determines which weapons your build can center on.
  • Coins work alongside Essence in the Store as the other progression currency.

Codes are one way to stock up. Redeem them via the Enter code field at the bottom of the Store window. As of the September 10, 2026 update, two codes were reported active:

CodeReported reward
CLASSES25 Essence and 308.25k Coins
LAUNCH25 Essence and 15.41k Coins

Code values change frequently, so check them in-game before relying on the amounts above.

How to use this before your run

  1. Check which classes, pets, and weapons you've already unlocked with Coins and Essence — those define your available build components.
  2. Redeem any working codes to top up Essence (for pets and classes) and Coins.
  3. During the run, prioritize upgrade picks that compound: attack speed feeding crit-driven weapons, plus-one attack count on multi-hit weapons like the Boomerang, and adding extra weapons rather than over-investing in one.

There isn't yet a recorded, tested full loadout with verified compatibility between specific weapons, gear, and evolutions — so for any specific weapon pairing or evolution recipe beyond the patterns above, confirm behavior in-game before committing a run to it.
